Description
The Morrison Formation is a distinctive sequence of Upper Jurassic sedimentary rock which has been the most fertile source of dinosaur fossils in North America. Most of the fossils occur in the green siltstone beds and lower sandstones, relics of the rivers and floodplains of the Jurassic period. Green rock layers are visible around the Delicate Arch Viewpoint from the Brushy Basin Member of the Morrison Formation.
The green color comes from reduced iron.
This iron is different because it formed in a low-oxygen
environment—like under water—which gave it a green color. Green vegetation compliments the landscape in early summer. The sediments of this green rock layer come from a humid era in Arches' Jurassic past, with rivers and floodplains.
