Description
Swift Stream cars would often be placed adjacent to dining cars, and they would serve as both a lounge for passengers, and a waiting area for those waiting for their dining reservation. This New York Central Swift Stream was in operation for 22 years. Amtrak acquired the car in 1971, and Amtrak retired the car in 1981. It was then sold to a private owner in 1983. The Swift Stream was constructed as part of the New York Central’s massive post-WWII improvement program. The railroad referred to their passengers trains collectively as the “Great Steel Fleet” and advertising of this era highlighted the “NEW New York Central. The Swift Stream was built in 1949 by the Budd company in their trademark all-stainless steel construction. As of 2024,This operational sleeper/lounge car was purchased by United Railroad Historical Society (URHS) in July of 2024. What a great piece of history saved. I captured this Swift Stream 800460 parked at the Whippany Railroad museum circa 2020.
