Description
People getting ready to board the #21 Cable car located in San Francisco. A cable car (usually known as a cable tram outside North America) is a type of cable railway used for mass transit where rail cars are hauled by a continuously moving cable running at a constant speed. Individual cars stop and start by releasing and gripping this cable as required. Cable Car number 21 and 5 (behind) currently has the standard paint scheme for Powell Street cable cars, which honors the very first paint design, displayed on Powell cable car No. 1. It is a simplified version of the historic 1888 livery resurrected in 1973 to celebrate the centennial of the world’s first cable car line on Clay Street. These two cable cars where built in 1893 by Carter Brothers.
